Drexel Hill’s legacy convention center is there to stay, and it’s welcoming a whole new segment of potential customers to stay too — in its brand new Holiday Inn & Suites coming early next year, according to a Philadelphia Business Journal report by Kenneth Hilario.

Drexelbrook Associates, the owner of its namesake apartment living community and event center, has announced plans to build the 100-room Holiday Inn & Suites Philadelphia at Drexelbrook.

“The main reason we are adding a hotel to our existing portfolio is to capture a larger wedding, corporate, and SMERF (social, military, education, religious, and fraternal groups) market, which we feel there is a very strong need for in our area,” said Drexelbrook Catering CEO and General Manager Domenick Savino.

An April 6 groundbreaking ceremony will kick off the expansion project, which will also encompass a renovation involving new carpets, wall coverings, and paint for the Drexelbrook Catering & Special Event Center, the report explained. The event center last upgraded its facilities in 2000.

“What we are doing is relatively major,” said Director of Development Henrik Werring. “We’re making sure it’s shipshape.”
