The owner of Drexelbrook residential and catering facilities in Drexel Hill, L. William Kay II, has died from complications of COVID-19, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Kay passed away on Easter Sunday, April 12.

“He was on a ventilator for probably 12 days,” Domenick Savino, CEO/General Manager of Drexelbrook Special Event Center & Hotel, said. “It’s terrible.”

Kay was a successful real estate developer in the 1950s. One of his most proud achievements was the Drexelbrook community, a residential facility in Drexel Hill that was once home to Dick Clark and Ed McMahon.

Kay owned and operated the Drexelbrook for more than 60 years.

“Mr. Kay loved Drexelbrook, the people that worked for him and nothing made him happier than to see his dream of having a hotel come true,” Savino wrote on a Facebook post.

The Holiday Inn & Suites Philadelphia at Drexelbrook opened in May nearly a year ago.

Kay was a founding board member of the Brandywine Health Foundation and a board member of Delaware County Memorial Hospital. He supported the Foundation for Delaware County, the McNeil Children’s Library at the Brandywine Center in Coatesville, Pa., and the Chester County SPCA.
