Jay Wright was all set to make his debut calling his first game with the CBS Sports Network team at Wednesday’s Villanova-Penn game at the Finneran Pavillion, but he was having trouble getting to them, writes Mike Jensen for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“He’s not going to make those last 20 feet,” a photographer said to broadcaster Tom McCarthy.

It seems there were several well-wishers blocking his path.

The moment was a reminder that Jay Wright at Villanova will always be a rock star.

“When’s the last time you heard a PA announcer announce a broadcaster and the whole place rises to its feet?” Jensen wrote.

As to Wright’s performance in his new broadcast career? Nothing to be concerned about.

“He was himself,” McCarthy said later. “He was Jay Wright. He wasn’t trying to be somebody else.”

As McCarthy called the action he would add a “Jay” into a sentence, signaling he wanted the new guy to say something.

“We had a lot of fun,” said former Villanova coach and announcer Steve Lappas.  “He didn’t need anybody taking care of him.”
