Lansdowne-born musician Steve Gunn has released his latest album, The Unseen in Between, which takes his music in a more personal direction, writes Tom Beck for Philadelphia Weekly.

One of the hit singles from the album – “Stonehurst Cowboy” – tells the story of the artist’s recently departed father, who grew up as a street-fighting kid in Stonehurst, a neighborhood in Upper Darby. The song invokes images of the suburban house where his father grew up and highlights the trees and streets in the neighborhood.

“I don’t make visual art, but I’m certainly informed by it,” said Gunn.

Gunn moved to New York after earning his bachelor’s degree in film and media arts from Temple. There, he worked at a number of art galleries.

In addition to visual art, Gunn’s music is also influenced by local musicians, including the late Jack Rose, the folk-influenced bluesman.

“I got really into certain kinds of art and artists, their stories, and their philosophies,” said Gunn. “There’s definitely a correlation with music.”
