Gaetano’s Pizza & Steaks in Clifton Heights Closes Its Doors

Margie Demore, owner of Gaetano’s Pizza & Steaks.

Monday night gave us Halloween activities, a rain-delayed World Series and the last night for Gaetano’s Pizza and Steaks in Clifton Heights, writes Matt Petrillo for CBS Philadelphia.

The news had the phones ringing off the hook at Gaetano’s as customers rushed to get their last pizza orders in. Customers lined up outside the door before owner Margie Demore even opened Monday.

“Oh, my gosh, I feel loved. You know this is our customers. This is why I do this,” Demore said.

Many locals claim Gaetano’s as the best place in Clifton Heights for take-out. The pizza is praised for its cheese and crust, but also for a homemade sauce that’s been unchanged for three decades.

Demore has been at Gaetano’s for nearly 30 years, first as a worker, then as boss when she took over from the previous owners five years ago.

Now she needs to step down for health reasons after being diagnosed three-and-a-half years ago with stage four breast cancer.

“So at any time I can stop responding to treatment. I wanted to have all my ducks in a row before any of that happens,” Demore said.
