In these days of pilot shortages and canceled or delayed flights, it’s not surprising that issues with mishandled luggage can also emerge.

American Airlines, the largest carrier at Philadelphia International Airport, has the dubious honor of having the worst rate of mishandled luggage among airlines, according to an Air Travel Consumer Report compiled by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The report lists the rate of mishandled bags at one for every 100 bags put on board an American Airline aircraft, writes the DBJ staff for Philadelphia Business Journal.

It handled 6 million pieces of luggage, with 60,276 bags mishandled, according to the report.

Mishandling refers to the number of checked bags that are lost, damaged, delayed, and pilfered, as reported by or on behalf of the passenger.

The incidents cover domestic nonstop scheduled passenger flights in July 2022.

Conversely, PHL’s second-largest carrier, Frontier Airlines, was in the top three for baggage handling performance.

It handled 867,131 bags, with 3,780 mishandled, or .44 percent.

By comparison, Spirit Airlines placed 1.2 million bags on board its aircraft, with 6,376 bags mishandled, or .53 percent.

JetBlue Airways handled 1.4 million bags, with 9,483 mishandled, or .69 percent.
