A survey of 26,259 passengers who have flown in the past year ranked Philadelphia International Airport as the worst large airport in the country, writes Brian Saunders for PhillyVoice.

The annual survey from J.D. Power placed PHL dead last out of 27 large airports that have at least 10 to 32.9 million passengers each year.

The report was conducted August 2021 through July 2022. It asks about terminal facilities, arrival and departure, baggage claim, security check, baggage check; and food, beverage, and retail.

Out of a possible 1,000 points, it was awarded 729 – a 30-point drop from last year.

Michael Taylor, travel intelligence lead at J.D. Power, said pent-up demand, labor shortages, and rising prices have made airports crowded and passengers frustrated.

PHL has undertaken multi-year improvement projects to its passenger infrastructure.

“We are advancing critical initiatives to evolve PHL’s campus, including restroom renovations, network upgrades, and pilot programs designed to improve our passengers’ and team members’ experience within the airport’s existing campus,” an emailed statement from a PHL spokesman said.

The airport also is installing new software to provide live, up-to-date information on flights in the security checkpoint area, as well as new holdrooms in seating terminals.
