Upper Darby’s second annual Pride Festival is returning to Upper Darby High School on June 11, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.
The free event, from 1 to 5 p.m., has 90 vendors participating, three food trucks and 20 performers.
There will be singers, poets, rappers, dancers (including a belly dancer), face painting, music, and games for kids.
“We also have Philly Cheer Elite,” said event organizer BJ Bryant. Philly Cheer Elite is a nonprofit all-volunteer cheerleading group comprised of LGBTQ+ and ally adults.
The Pride Festival was created last year by UDTJ, a social justice organization dedicated to creating an inclusive community and ending systemic racism and police brutality.
The ultimate goal of the festival is to create a space for the LGBTQ community in Delaware County.
“We’ll be transitioning into Delaware County Pride next year,” said UDTJ board member Kyle McIntyre. “… We just want it to be a place where people can come, enjoy, celebrate, learn, understand, take action, justice — all of our key values that make up UDTJ.”
Last year’s festival had 350 attendees and 40 vendors.
The festival will end with a drag show, with performers from Philadelphia and Delaware County.
