Crozer Health is raising some local eyebrows as it continues to cut hospital services at its four Delaware County hospitals, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.

The cuts are part of an effort by parent company Prospect Medical Holdings to shore up its finances.

Prospect has taken over $654 million in profits from the Crozer system, at the same time that Crozer’s receiving pandemic relief funds while complaining they need money and can’t maintain services throughout COVID, said U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon.

She is more hopeful about the nonprofit ChristianaCare’s interest in the Crozer system.

State Rep. Mike Zabel’s, whose 163rd District includes Delaware County Memorial Hospital, thinks the hospital is being targeted.

“Slowly but surely, Crozer has been taking away services from Delaware County Memorial Hospital to such an extent that by this summer, all that will really be operating there is an emergency room,” he said, believing the eventual goal is closing the hospital.

Crozer’s chief executive officer Kevin Spiegel declined comment.

“The bottom line is that there is no place else to go,” for people on subsidized health care. Surgeries will be sacrificed and people will lose their lives, said  State Sen. Anthony H. Williams.
