Career Corner: Record Level Job Openings Reach 1.8 Jobs for Each Unemployed Person

The Great Resignation continues in full force, with February being another big month for people leaving. And analysts are now saying the number of open jobs has gotten so big, it has created a record number of job openings compared to unemployed people.

Per CNBC, there are now enough jobs for each unemployed person to have 1.8 jobs. The exact number is 11.27 million openings and 6.27 million unemployed.

It is the fields of education and healthcare that continue to have the greatest need for new workers, with there being 2.23 million openings in February. Business careers, as well as transportation, are similarly in high demand around the 2 million mark each.

This is all despite the fact that hirings in February had actually increased from the prior month. For February there were 263,000 people hired for new jobs. And yet there is still such a high demand for workers that many businesses are now struggling.

The leisure and hospitality industry has still not recovered from the major hits it took at the start of the pandemic, with the rate of people quitting those jobs being stuck at 5.6%.

Overall, the number of people quitting last month in the country did not match previous peaks from last year, but did increase over January, with 4.35 million leaving in February.

All of this combined has created an environment of incredible economic upheaval. Between inflation spikes, employees dissatisfied with their work conditions, and businesses unable to fill positions, it has everyone craving a return to economic stability, but unsure how to reach that point.
