The Lansdowne Theater, a product of the Roaring ’20s, was once a regional hub for the arts.

Now there’s a chance it will hold a similar role as a live performing arts center. Here’s what to expect if a projected 2023 reopening comes about, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.

Matt Schultz, executive director of the nonprofit Historic Lansdowne Theater Corp., said the “community has always wanted the theater to return to a place of public entertainment”.

BRE Presents, a music promotion company, was looking to lease a venue for concerts.

It seemed like a good fit.

“Our goal from a design standpoint is to convert the building from a single-screen movie theater to a regional concert venue, featuring internationally and nationally known adult alternative and singer-songwriters here, but we want the building to look like it did in the late 1920s, early 1930s,” Schultz said.

Despite its origins, there are no plans to show movies at the revitalized Lansdowne Theater.

HLTC has removed damaged seats and asbestos and restored the ticket booth and marquee.

Schultz said the Lansdowne is one of the last theaters from Hollywood’s Golden Age that hasn’t been demolished or converted into some other use.
