Drexel Hill field hockey player Margo Carlin was excited by the possibilities last summer when a new rule allowed college athletes to be paid for their name, image, and likeness, writes Helen Ubinas for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

She ended up getting a stick sponsorship from Y1 Hockey.

But the 20-year-old, who plays for Boston College, wanted to go beyond personal rewards.

“I’ve had many opportunities in my life,” she said.. “And I think it was important to help people that weren’t given the same opportunities as me.”

Carlin decided she would support Covenant House, which helps young homeless people in more than six countries and 31 cities, including Philadelphia.

Carlin’s father is on the board and her family has been involved with Covenant House for years.

Carlin has created a fundraising campaign on social media with a goal to raise $30,000. As of Jan. 22, the fund stood at $27,725.

Covenant House is now talking with athletes in Los Angeles and New Orleans, using Carlin’s effort as inspiration.

“It’s a master class for all of us in how one person at a time could create good in the world,” said Kevin Ryan, president and CEO of Covenant House International.
