Bishop Dedicates New School, SS. Cyril and Philomena Catholic School in Lansdowne
SS. Cyril and Philomena Catholic School in Lansdowne was dedicated Oct. 5 during a ceremony led by Bishop Michael Fitzgerald, along with students, school administrators, and civic officials, writes the staff of CatholicPhilly.com.
The newly renovated SS Cyril and Philomena school, located in the former St. Philomena School, is comprised of new students, and students from St. Cyril School in East Lansdowne, less than a mile away.
St. Cyril was an Independence Mission Catholic school in 2012, but the parish closed and merged with St. Philomena.
IMS renovated the St. Philomena school building and relocated students and staff from St. Cyril’s.
The new SS Cyril and Philomena school has a separate gym and cafeteria, air-conditioned classrooms, updated well-insulated windows, and new floors and lighting.
A bus stop on the school corner makes it easily accessible by public transportation.
“By moving St. Cyril School students into the St. Philomena building, not only are we providing a markedly improved setting for learning, but we are also bringing a Catholic school back to the grounds of the parish, which has been without one since 2011, and pairing an active parish with our engaged school community,” said Bruce Robinson, president and CEO of Independence Mission Schools.
