Saint Cyril of Alexandria Church in East Lansdowne will no longer be a place of worship for the St. Philomena Parish in Lansdowne and will close as a Roman Catholic church, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia has announced.

The St. Cyril of Alexandria Parish merged with the St. Philomena parish in 2013 as part of the Parish Area Pastoral Planning Initiative.

At the time, the St. Cyril of Alexandria church building was a worship site for the merged St. Philomena Parish.

The St. Cyril of Alexandria church has not been regularly used for worship since Christmas 2018. Only infrequent liturgies were celebrated for students attending the Saint Cyril of Alexandria Mission School located on the property.

Closing the church does not present an undue hardship to parishioners since St. Philomena and St. Cyril church were only a mile apart from each other. Worship will continue at St. Philomena Church.

Maintaining St. Cyril Church was a financial strain for the merged St. Philomena parish. Sale of the property will relieve the parish of debt and pay for needed roof repairs.

A copy of the official canonical decrees regarding the relegations can be found here.
