Is zero waste possible in Delaware County? A new consultant will find out.

Delaware County Council voted unanimously Tuesday to hire California-based Zero Waste Associates as a consultant on a 12-month project to figure out how the county should handle its trash over the next 10 years, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Work will begin Dec. 1 on the $215,000 consulting job.

The county needs to look at trash disposal options since a contract between the Delaware County Solid Waste Authority and Covanta Delaware Valley LLP runs out in April 2022. Covanta burns 370,000 tons of the county’s trash annually at its waste-to-steam facility in Chester.

A Solid Waste Authority landfill could run out of space next year, prompting plans for a $50 million landfill expansion.

Zero Waste Associates estimates it will have a final version of its Solid Waste Management Plan could be available by August.

New strategies “can contribute to healthier and more just communities while mitigating the impacts of climate change,” wrote Ruth C. Abbe, principal of Zero Waste Associates in a proposal.  They can also create new jobs and economic development.
