This Delaware County Orchard Is Experiencing an Apple Explosion

By

Whatever else you can say about our weather, one thing is true.  If you’re an apple, it’s the best weather ever, reports Jan Carabeo for CBS 3 Philly.

The manager of Linvilla Orchards in Media says they are seeing the best crop of apples they’ve ever had.

“We’re real excited about our apple crop this year. It’s been the biggest in Linvilla’s history,” said farm manager Norm Schultz.

The credit for Linvilla’s success goes to Mother Nature.

“The bloom this year was the biggest ever. The weather was perfect, and the fruit set fantastic,” he said.

This, despite climate change, which creates warmer and warmer winters, making the trees bloom earlier.

When the trees bloom in April instead of May, the fragile flowers are at greater risk of a devastating freeze.

Dead flowers mean no apples and so there’s no production. That happened in 2020, the worst year ever for apples at Linvilla.

This spring saw tremendous blooms and pleasant temperatures for bees to pollinate.

“It was as bad as it could get. But this year, as life balances out, it’s as good as it can get,” Schultz  said.
