Upper Darby Mayor’s Plan Moves Publicly-Funded Summer Stage to Private Nonprofit

By

Upper Darby Mayor Barbarann Keffer announced a proposal Tuesday night to preserve the future of Upper Darby Summer Stage, writes the staff for CBS 3 Philly.

Her proposal calls for the program to be administered by the nonprofit Upper Darby Arts and Education Foundation. It would have “full artistic, personnel and financial control,” according to the proposal.

“The Summer Stage program is an invaluable public trust and that is why we have worked so hard to put together a plan that preserves, protects, and grows the program even in the wake of Mr. Dietzler’s retirement,” Mayor Barbarann Keffer said in a statement.

Harry Dietzler founded the program in 1975 as a creative outlet for children in the community. He has served as its executive director. He recently retired from the position.

The proposal offers him continued artistic control of the program if he wants to participate.

It’s now funded and managed by Upper Darby Township and the Upper Darby School Board.

The school board, the township and the Foundation would have to approve the proposal.

Upper Darby will also allocate $2.5 million to fund up to 500 Summer Stage scholarships annually.
