At Upper Darby’s Summer Stage, the Show Must Go On (Line)
Upper Darby Summer Stage is getting ready to open its doors for a 45th season.
Virtually.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Summer Stage, an annual theater tradition in Upper Darby, has had to get creative in what is normally a very “in-person” experience, writes Marc Narducci for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Luckily, thanks to virtual classes and performances, fourth graders to 28-year-olds will still get to experience the fun, hard work and friendships of live theater.
“This summer there will be different groups working online — and small groups with teachers working on singing, dancing, and monologues — and then creating a kind of performance that they will put on for family and friends online,” says Summer Stage founder Harry Dietzler.
It will not be easy. Summer Stage normally produce six different children’s shows and an adult musical.
The first group starts today (June 19) but there’s plenty of time to sign up and participate. Just visit UDPAC.org between now and the second week of July.
Summer Stage, which counts Tina Fey as one of its alums, began 45 years ago with a 20-year-old Dietzler, who lamented that Upper Darby High School’s theater sat idle in the summer months.
