Villanova Runner Sean Dolan Takes a Different Path in a Family of Runners

Sean Dolan chose a different path from his family in Big 5 running, opting to compete for Villanova University rather than its rival Penn, writes Bridget Hyland for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

As a freshman, he was one of five collegians that qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials semifinals in the 800 meters.  He was fifth in the heat, narrowly missing the finals.

“Like, I’m there, I have to race and then next thing you know I’m out and then I’m watching on the sidelines, but it was a crazy experience,” Dolan said.

The men’s track and cross-country star is big into the competition.

That helped get him to All-American last year and win the Big East title in the 800 meters.

He got serious about running as a freshman in high school.  His father is director of the University of Pennsylvania cross-country and track team. His brother Tim, a U of P. senior, runs for his father.

Dolan, now a Villanova junior, picked Villanova over the family favorite, Penn, once he saw Villanova’s campus.

Dolan intends to keep running for Villanova, returning to the Olympic trials in three years.
