Marcus O’Sullivan, a native of Ireland, has gone from competing at the Penn Relays for Villanova University to coaching new generations of Wildcats on the men’s track and field team, writes Joe Juliano for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Expectations are always high for Villanova when it comes to the Penn Relays. The school has won a combined 136 Championship of America men’s and women’s relay titles. Out of these, Villanova men have won 94, two of them just last year in the distance medley and mile relays.

“I look at Penn as being a double-edged sword,” he said. “It’s great if you win. It’s not so good if you don’t. You’re a Villanovan. It’s unfortunate in many ways, but there’s no such thing as second, third.”

Nonetheless, he tries to keep things as stress-free as possible for his runners.

“You keep them calm,” he said. “You just try to alleviate as much stress as possible.”
