Pennsylvania is one of the less energy-expensive states in the nation, according to a new report recently released by WalletHub.

WalletHub compared the monthly energy bills in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The personal-finance website used a special formula that accounted for the majority of residential energy types, including electricity, natural gas, motor fuel, and home heating oil.

Pennsylvania ranked at No. 34 with an average monthly energy bill of $313. This puts the Keystone State the eighteenth least energy-expensive state in the nation.

Based on monthly motor-fuel costs, the state came in as the fifth least energy-expensive state with an average bill of $141. However, the average monthly home heating-oil bill of $23 places the state among the most expensive in ninth place.

Pennsylvania ranked in No. 30 based on a monthly electricity bill at $124 and in No. 12 based on a $46 average monthly natural gas bill.

The state also ranked at No. 32 in electricity consumption per consumer, No. 21 for natural gas consumption per consumer, and No. 46 in motor-fuel consumption per driver.

In the U.S., energy costs eat between 5 and 22 percent of families’ total after-tax income.
