According to a new report by PennEnvironment, Swarthmore College is among the top 10 colleges and universities in the country for embracing renewable energy, writes Frank Kummer for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Swarthmore, which ranked seventh, gets all of its electricity through renewable sources, primarily by buying renewable energy credits. RECs allow institutions to buy renewable power that has been generated on their behalf.

“Campus communities are leading the charge,” said David Masur, director of PennEnvironment. “Campuses are making everyday decisions that reflect their values. They care about climate change and renewable energy.”

According to Aurora Winslade, director of sustainability at Swarthmore, the Delaware County college has been buying renewable energy credits for more than two decades.

But now, the school is planning on taking this one step further by erecting solar panels onsite to create its own energy.

The panels that will be positioned on up to 20 buildings could generate up to 2,000 megawatt hours per year of electricity.

“We want to generate as much onsite as possible,” said Winslade.

The educational institution is also looking to sign an agreement to buy power directly from an offsite renewable energy facility.
