State House Considers Bill Making Daylight Saving Time Permanent in Pennsylvania

By

State Rep. Margo Davis (D-Delaware County) has signed on to a bill that would make Daylight Saving Time a year-round proposition in Pennsylvania, writes Jan Murphy for pennlive.com.

Rep. Davis said she hears complaints when she travels to foreign countries about how inconvenient the semi-annual time changes are for those trying to conduct business with American companies.

The bill urges Congress to make Daylight Saving permanent.

The House State Government Committee approved the bill 23-2 on Wednesday.

Rep. Ryan Mackenizie (R-Lehigh County) introduced the bill because of the frequent complaints from constituents about changing the clocks.

“If we would go to Daylight Saving Time, there have been various studies that show there would be energy savings to the United States. There would be less crime. There would be healthier individuals because of reduced traffic accidents, less strokes, etc.,” Mackenzie said. “There would be more time to be spent outdoors and doing leisure activities. “

Rep. Russ Diamond, R-Lebanon County) has a similar bill but it keeps the state on standard time year-round.

He’s concerned that permanent Daylight Savings would mean dark winter mornings, a safety issue for school children.
