Kathy and Richard Meinzer of Landenberg are huge fans of demolition derbies. They took the opportunity recently to enjoy their favorite pastime at the Cecil County Fair, writes Carl Hamilton for The Cecil Whig.

“It’s funny as hell,” said Kathy. “That’s why you come to the fair — the demolition derby and the funnel cake — those are the two reasons.”

“It’s like medieval jousting,” said Richard. “I’ve watched so many car races, where the idea is not to crash, and a demotion derby completely flips that idea. It really comes down to the ‘last man standing.’”

For him, the best moments at the demolition derby come when cars start “completely losing their ball joints and steering wheels dropping” and “blowouts that really catch your attention.”

The Cecil County Fair did not disappoint in this regard. A rather destructive front-end collision in the ring signified the beginning of the end for one competitor.

“There goes that guy’s radiator,” announced Richard. “He just lost his cooling system.”
