Yeadon Borough police and residents turn mulch at the new LOVE Community garden in Yeadon Park.

Yeadon Police are starting what they say is the first-ever police-community garden in the country as a way to foster good relations in the community, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

The garden will be at Yeadon Park,  523 S. Union Ave.

Police Chief Anthony “Chachi” Paparo hopes there will eventually be six or seven in Yeadon.

Officers will work in the garden with residents. Anything grown goes to those who work the soil and to area food banks.

The hope is for residents and police to get together beyond the tension of a 911 call or a traffic stop.

“In this case, you’re going to be in the ground talking, learning about one another and we’re going to learn about you so everyone is on a first-name basis,” Paparo said.

Yeadon police are participating in the L.O.V.E. is the Answer program dedicated to improving police and community relationships.

The goal is to build relationships and destroy hate, division and racism.

Paparo credited borough council and the mayor for their support, as well as Yeadon police officers for embracing the philosophy of meeting the public.
