Despite most Americans believing cannabis should be legal, the fight over the legalization of this controversial substance continues to brew in many states, including Pennsylvania, writes Will Yakowicz for Forbes.

Currently, 17 states have legalized the use of pot. But while medical marijuana has been legal in the Keystone State since 2016, adult use of recreational marijuana is still facing significant obstacles.

The biggest one is the Republican legislators who control the House and Senate. Both House Speaker Bryan Cutler and Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman have expressed their opposition to the legalization of pot.

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman believes that if residents are allowed to buy as much grain alcohol as they want and smoke as many cigarettes as they like, they should be allowed to buy some cannabis without risking being arrested.

“It’s a bizarre dislocation of logic and integrity there,” he said. “I think it’s the same kind of wingnuts in Footloose who wanted to ban dancing. It has that same flavor.”

He also likened the current “conservative freak-out” over weed to the last few years before the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage.

“We have gay marriage, and the world didn’t spin off its axis,” he said.
