Leah Douglas has a unique art gallery at the Philadelphia International Airport. Most people probably don’t know about it, writes Tom Gralish for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Douglas is the airport’s director of guest experience and chief curator.  Part of her job is to keep an eye out for local artists. The hope is to feature them in the airport’s art display.

The idea is to get passengers to pause for a moment while catching a flight.

She’s been creating these temporary art exhibitions in the hallways and concourses of the airport for more than 20 years.

“As diverse as the collections are, most have been gathered primarily as a hobby … or handed down from one family member to another,” said Douglas. “While the activity of collecting is a universal experience, each collection is personal and unique as each object often represents a specific remembrance or story.”

For the airport’s latest exhibit, “Private Collections: Personal Obsessions,” she chose volunteered items from fellow airport staff members.

She ended up with an eclectic mix of superhero stuff; Dr. Who Daleks, beer bottles, haircare tins, and masks.

The display is at the end of Terminal D. It is only available to ticketed passengers.

“As diverse as the collections are, most have been gathered primarily as a hobby … or handed down from one family member to another,” said Douglas. “While the activity of collecting is a universal experience, each collection is personal and unique as each object often represents a specific remembrance or story.”
