Citizens Bank is closing three Giant supermarket branches, two of them in Delaware County, writes Jeff Blumenthal for Philadelphia Business Journal.

Branches are closing at the Giant supermarket at 543 N. Oak Ave. in Aldan and at 3400 Concord Road in Aston.

A third branch is closing in Southampton.

Citizens is Philadelphia’s fifth-largest bank, with 20 branches inside Giant stores in southeast Pennsylvania.

In November, Citizens announced it was closing 40 of its branches at Stop & Shop store, mostly in New England, but not at Giant.

Out of 300 Citizen Bank Pennsylvania branches, 90 are in supermarkets, including nine in Acme stores, one in a Shoprite and one in a Super Fresh.

“There is no shift in our strategy and the approach we’ve taken with modernizing our branch network, Citizens spokesman Rory Sheehan said.

The bank continually looks at customer patterns and foot traffic, noting that the pandemic has accelerated digital banking.

Even so, “We believe branches are an important element of our omni-channel approach that allows us to meet customers where and when they want to bank. This includes our in-store branches,” Sheehan said.
