Navy Veteran From Chester Receives Birthday Drive By and a Flag on His 100th

By

A Navy veteran from Chester who saw action in both World II and the Korean War recently celebrated his 100th birthday with the community, reports Joe Holden for Philadelphia.cbslocal.com.

Otis Evans waved to family, friends and admirers from the Sterling Nursing Home as supporters and First Responders drove past with sirens running.

“It’s so exciting. It’s a little overwhelming for me because he’s like it’s just another day. For me, it’s such a big occasion worth celebrating. He’s seen so much,” son Michael Evans said.

Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon also stopped by with a U.S. Flag, some cake and well wishes.

“It’s just such a great opportunity to say hi. They’re presenting him right now with a flag that we had flown over the Capitol. We always want to honor our veterans and reaching the milestone of 100 years is just fabulous,” Scanlon said.

The celebration was the closest his five children and other family have been to Evans in more than 10 months.

Evans was taken by surprise.

“Oh, I thought it was wonderful, a wonderful day. Happy birthday, I’ve never had one like this. Happy birthday, old man,” Evans said.
