Delaware County Reaches Grim Milestone With 1,000 COVID-19 Deaths Reported

The number of reported positive COVID-19 cases in Delaware County jumped by 361 Jan. 5 as the county reached 1,000 COVID-19 deaths, according to the Chester County Health Department.

The health department reported 29,599 positive cases on Tuesday, Jan. 5. It reported 29,277 cases on Monday, Jan. 4.

One additional fatality was reported from Clifton Heights on Jan. 5, bringing the total number of deaths in the county to 1,000.

Of those, 688 were in long-term care facilities and personal care homes, according to the Chester County Health Department.

COVID-19 fatalities have been reported in 43 of the county’s 49 municipalities.

Yeadon Borough continues to have the highest percentage of population being affected by the virus. Total cases are 944, or 8.22 percent of its 11,471 population.

Upper Darby has the most cases, with 4,539 cases reported, or 5.46 percent of Upper Darby’s 82,993 population.

There are 643 cases still under investigation, to which no municipality has yet been assigned.

The county has had 179,606 people test negative for the virus. The health department is reporting a 76.28 percent recovery rate.

Cases broken down by age groups, as reported Tuesday, Jan.5 are:

  • Under 10: 1,006 cases
  • 10 to 19: 2,837 cases
  • 20 to 29: 5,100 cases  
  • 30 to 39: 4,361 cases  
  • 40 to 49: 4,053 cases
  • 50 to 59: 4,679 cases
  • 60 to 69: 3,641 cases
  • 70 to 79: 1,885 cases
  • 80 and over: 2,023 cases

The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed as of noon, Jan. 5, that there were 8,818 additional cases of COVID-19 reported statewide, with total cases at 673,915

There were 185 deaths reported, for a total of 16,546.
