Narcan Nasal Spray from Radnor’s Adapt Pharma is now more easily available to anybody who might need it, making it a true lifesaver for families of opioid addicts, writes Alexandra Rockey Fleming for The Washington Post.

When administered within the critical first minutes of a potentially deadly overdose, or even up to an hour later in some cases, Narcan can resuscitate a victim before it’s too late by blocking the opioid receptors in the brain. This both resuscitates the user and allows further emergency treatment to be administered as necessary.

Now, thanks to enhancements in law and policy surrounding the medication that have made it more accessible, many lives have been saved, according to addiction-awareness advocates.

Joe Adams, the medical director of an opioid-treatment program in Baltimore, said that it’s not only people in active addiction who should carry Narcan.

“It’s anybody with teenagers or young adults in their household, anybody who’s prescribed or knows someone who’s taking prescription opiates,” he said. “I’ve heard from plenty of people who were glad to have had it, and I’ve heard from plenty of people who wish they’d had it.”
