A 35-year corrections officer at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility in Concord died Sunday afternoon of COVID-19, writes Alex Rose for the Daily Times.

A name is being withheld but other guards indicated the man was in his 70s. A second corrections officer has reportedly been hospitalized after testing positive.

“The devastating impacts of COVID-19 have been realized across Delaware County communities, with some municipalities recording the highest rates of residents infected in the region,” according to a statement from Geo Group, Inc., the private for-profit company that manages the county prison.

“The jail has not been immune to the surging cases, as many of our staff members and those in our care live in these communities.”

Geo is reporting 17 asymptomatic cases among inmates, all in quarantine.

The corrections officer is the first to lose his life to the virus at the prison. On Nov. 2, a 77-year-old inmate at the State Correctional Institute at Chester died of COVID-19.

At a November meeting of the Jail Oversight Board, it was reported that as of Nov. 10, the prison had 139 positive cases of COVID-19, with no positive cases between the end of May and Nov 10.
