During this time of year, excitement begins to build, especially for children, in anticipation of Halloween decorations, costumes and wearing a mask.
This year’s Halloween is looking a bit different because of COVID-19. Wearing masks has become a standard operating procedure every day and everywhere we go.
For children, it’s not only difficult to explain, but harder to assure mask wearing is happening when they’re interacting with their friends.
Nicolette Vona, 15, wanted to encourage her young brother Cameron, who has autism, to wear a mask.
Nicolette is an artist from a young age and with the help of the family pet, Dusty, she created a coloring book, “Dusty Wears His Mask.”

Nicolette’s mom, Jennifer, is a widow raising three kids and loves what her daughter is doing to help her brother and other children gain a new appreciation for wearing a mask.
Cameron is part of Child Guidance Resource Centers CREATE Program, which he enjoys attending.
