Philadelphia has more than its share of classic golf courses,, writes Andy Johnson for pga.com.

But only one architect, Donald Ross, is an outsider. He built Aronimink Golf Club in 1928.

After the Newtown Square course was restored in 2016 by Hanse Golf Course Design, it re-established itself as one of the finest courses in Philadelphia created by a non-Philadelphian.

This month it’s been hosting top golfers in the world at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

“I intended to make this course my masterpiece, but not until today did I realize I built better than I knew.” Ross said 20 years after Aronimink was finished.

Ross made expert use of a unique piece of land.

The course is shaped like a large bathroom sink.  Holes are laid out so sometimes you are playing downhill into the sink, like the par-4 10th and the 8th holes that form the “drain” at the base.

Others, like the par-5 9th and par 4-18th, start at the drain and finish uphill.

Ross gives the flattest holes some flair with dramatic bunkering.

But the most challenging are the side holes, 6, 7,15 and 16 with fairways placed across slopes.
