Haverford Township businesses are rolling out a unique digital gift card program they hope will keep the customers coming during the COVID-19 pandemic, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

Starting Nov. 1, residents can buy the “Discover Haverford Keep It Local” gift card which can be sent via email, text or hard copy along with a personal message.

The cards are good at 20 participating merchants in Haverford Township and can be spent at multiple locations.

The cards are the brainchild of The Haverford Partnership for Economic Development.

“In Haverford Township, there is a sincere desire to support our small businesses, especially during this COVID-19 crisis,” said Jeanne Angell, executive director of HPED. “Residents want our businesses to survive this difficult time.”

She’s hoping every resident will buy one or more of the cards during the holiday season. If enough cards are sold and used, it could infuse over a million dollars into the community, she said.

Studies show local independent retailers circulate 47 percent of their revenue back into the community. For national chains, only 14 percent stays in the community.
