Wawa has decided not to reopen its store at Broad and Walnut streets, another victim of the pandemic, writes Laura Smythe for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Center city office workers and late night city dwellers made the five-year-old store popular.

Its location was good, near City Hall, just off the Walnut-Locust stop on the Broad Street subway.

But no one expected the coronavirus.

Wawa spokeswoman Lori Bruce issued an emailed statement that the store would not be reopening “due to the unique circumstances that continue to impact our customers’ daily lives and our own store operations” amid the Covid-19 health crisis.

“This decision was a difficult one,” the statement continues. “But due to the impact from the pandemic coupled with some operational uncertainties of today, our long-term plans for this store are no longer viable.”

Wawa was eager to open the store ahead of the visit from Pope Francis in 2015 and it was the city flagship store before the store opened at Sixth and Chestnut streets in 2018.

Wawa is adapting to the pandemic, opening its first drive-thru location in Bucks County, expanding delivery, curbside ordering and pickup.
