Wawa has teamed up with its western Pennsylvania competitor, Sheetz, to donate food to two food banks in Eastern Pennsylvania, writes Brian C. Rittmeyer for triblive.com.

The two companies donated 1,000 lunches and $4,000 to Helping Hands Harvest Food Bank in Reading and Second Harvest Food Bank of Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania.

The lunches included a turkey sandwich, cookie, fruit cup, string cheese and a bottle of water.

PennLive reported that Helping Harvest planned to identify seniors who were most in need of the lunches and would deliver them directly to those people.

“With a combined mission of feeding people, our hope is to support those impacted by this pandemic, to provide relief to ensure that food is not added to the list of worries as we fight this pandemic,” Sheetz CEO Joe Sheetz said in a statement.

Organizations in need can also contact Sheetz and Wawa directly.

The rivalry between the two convenience store companies, one in Delaware County, the other in western Pennsylvania, is well known in the state.

It’s even the subject of a documentary in development which explores the passionate allegiances customers feel toward both stores.
