On July 21, Dr. Brieanne Seguin taught the first in-person class at Neumann University since coronavirus caused a switch to online classes on March 16.

It was also the first class in the university’s new master’s degree in athletic training.

The class was small. Only Seguin (the clinical coordinator for Neumann’s athletic training programs) and three students were in Health Sciences Center 245, a spacious lab.

Social distancing was not an issue. The four easily could have stayed 20 feet apart from one another.

Additional health guidelines were also in play. The professor and three students completed questionnaires that screen for coronavirus symptoms, had temperature checks, and wore masks.

According to Hubert Lee, athletic training program director, the students were given the option of coming to campus or learning online.

They chose in-person instruction, in part, he explained to gain hands-on experience with the models in the lab.

Jessica Kendall, one of the students, explained: “In-person instruction is important for our program because it allows us to utilize our labs and reinforce concepts using models. In-person learning is critical for Athletic Training, which is such a hands-on profession.”

Kendall added that Neumann’s program, which meets face to face only once a week, “gave me the flexibility to be able to continue to work part-time, as well as manage life with three young kids.”

“Everyone is looking for hope that we can resume face-to-face instruction,” said Lee. “This class is sort of a trial run.”

Classes at Neumann University begin on Aug. 31 following a hybrid learning model (a blend of in-person and online learning to reduce class size) and CDC-approved public health guidelines on campus.
