Students and faculty at Williamson College of the Trades in Media are adjusting to the pandemic as their school lives move on line, separated from the shops and tools on campus.

For Aaron Tallman, 2W2, a machine shop student, it’s meant replacing his shop time at Williamson with work as a CNC operator at Valley Precision Tool & Technology.

“I figure if I’m unable to participate in my shop time on location at Williamson, I’d better make up for it whenever I can while at home,” he said.

Tallman, who lives in Schuylkill County, is vice president of the freshman class at the college.

You can also find him volunteering at the Muir Volunteer Fire Company, where he’s been since February 2019, “the best second family I could ask for.”

He’s glad for the fire company work and missed volunteering at Williamson’s annual Service Week this year, cancelled because of COVID-19.

His volunteer work has put him close to some of the pandemic fallout.  Since quarantining at home, he’s responded to medical calls, house fires, brush fires, and motor vehicle accidents.

“During a time like this it’s nice to know that there are people just like myself, who will sacrifice and go to the same lengths as me for someone else,” he said.

Whether at Williamson, Valley Precision or with the fire company, one constant holds true for Tallman.

“Ultimately, we are responsible for completing the task, but I have my brothers next to me supporting one another through everything.”
