Stacy and Mike Schafer were recently forced to drive 19 hours straight from the west coast of Florida to their Havertown home, writes Sally A. Downey for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

It was March 19 and hotels were closed because of the coronavirus.

The solution to their problem, Lucy, was sitting back home in their driveway.

Lucy was their Airstream Flying Cloud, a travel trailer that’s shuttled them comfortably around the country.

The couple could have stopped for the night in a parking lot and slept in Lucy’s queen-sized bed.

Previous owners gave the Airstream its name, which also ties into the 1953 film, “The Long, Long Trailer” with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz involving a 32-foot travel trailer.

The couple, both 74, grew up in Delaware County, and married on Labor Day weekend 1967.

Stacy, who is retired, and Mike, who owns Silver Hammer, a home repair business, sold their Pocono vacation home of 42 years and got Lucy so they’d be free to travel.

Last summer they volunteered at Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park’s Welcome Center for a free hookup in the campground.

This summer they’re aiming for Vermont.
