Giovanni’s Media Barbershop Opts to Reopen, With COVID-19 Precautions, to Help Its Workers
Giovanni’s barbershop in Media has been struggling to accommodate the state business closures to contain the coronavirus with the need to keep its workers employed, writes Max Bennett for patch.com.
Now, the owner says she has little choice but to reopen her business on May 9.
Owner Nichole Missino says her workers are worried about feeding their families.
“We have all applied for unemployment, applied for loans,” she said. “They said we’d get all this money. Nobody has seen a dime.”
Missino has six employees. Some have children.
As far as customers, Missino said she is nearly booked for the anticipated May 9 opening. Others, though, criticize her for creating a health risk.
She emphasizes that her staff is trained in sanitation. The shop is probably cleaner than a Walmart, which is allowed to be open, because she can limit the people inside.
She will be setting up shrink wrap partitions between chairs to limit contact and has UV lights to disinfect barber tools.
Clients will wait outside in vehicles until their appointment.
Missino will also offer touch-less hand sanitizer, masks and face shields to clients, and will be checking clients’ temperatures.
