A Delaware County political icon has died. Thomas J. Judge Sr., who served 34 years as chairman of the Delaware County Republican Party, died April 11. He was 91, writes Chris Brennan for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Judge, of Darby Township, stepped down as chairman in 2009.

Judge was also the county’s recorder of deeds until retiring in 2018.

His niece, Carol Miller, now  party vice chairperson, said she learned from him how to treat people.

“He had the patience of a saint,” Miller said. “To be in politics as long as he was and not make any enemies was amazing to me. Whether you were the president or the janitor at the courthouse he would treat you like you were the most important person.”

Judge, an Army veteran, worked for Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central and Conrail, then ran the county’s Solid Waste Authority.

He was appointed Pennsylvania chairman of Then-Vice President George H.W. Bush’s presidential campaign in 1988.

“As the face of the Delaware County Republican Party for 30 years, Tom was a sentinel that served as protector and guardian of the party,” said Andy Reilly who succeeded Judge as county chairman in 2009.
