Delco Gives Day, a unique 24-hour fundraiser set up by The Foundation for Delaware County to benefit local nonprofits, blew away all expectations with a final figure tally showing that $1.7 million was raised, writes Lynette Hazelton for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

That money will help 300 area nonprofits provide hunger relief, day care, education, emergency services and much more.

On May 8 and 9, 9,482 people raised the $1.7 million, surpassing the Foundation’s goal by a million dollars.

The two-day event combined online fundraising with in-person community activities, culminating in a celebration in Media’s Rose Tree Park.

“We’re blown away by the generosity of the people who stepped up,” said Katy Lichtenstein, the Foundation’s director of communications.

In addition to the donations, each participating nonprofit receives bonus funding from the Foundation and business sponsors..

Mitzvah Circle Foundation, which helps clients with clothing insecurity, diaper needs, and school supplies, won the top spot on the leaderboard by raising over $106,000.

Beyond fundraising, Delco Gives also raised resident awareness about nonprofits that surround them.

“People were very energized. That was one of our goals to bring the community together around something good,” Lichtenstein said.
