Springfield Hospital is closing down most of its operations except for emergency services until June, affecting about 30 nurses, writes Kathleeen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

A workplace flex program began at the hospital Monday.

The hospital handles a lot of elective surgery and there’s been a significant drop in patients because of the pandemic.

“Certain clinical and non-clinical employees may be called back to assist if our hospitals experience a surge in patient volumes due to the COVID-19 outbreak,”  said Rich Leonowitz, director of media relations for Crozer-Keystone Health System.

The Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals released a statement that the nurses should be able to work at other Crozer hospitals during the temporary shutdown.

Crozer-Keystone owns Springfield Hospital as well as Delaware County Memorial , Crozer-Keystone Medical Center in Upland, and Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park.

“We are doing everything possible to find alternative assignments for staff assigned to the flex program,” Leonowitz said.

All of the system’s primary care practices are open and available for their patients.

Hospital officials and Association representatives will meet this week to discuss the situation.
