“Knowing that we have community spread really reinforces the need for us to continue social distancing,” she said at an April 7 press conference hosted by Delaware County Council.

“I have to ask you to continue your sacrifice because I expect the number of infections will increase for a while.  Right now the only cure we have for coronavirus is that physical distance and keeping your germs to yourself by wearing masks.”

George W. Hill Prison

Delaware County Councilman Kevin Madden reported at an April 7 press conference that 20 employees and 19 inmates have tested positive for COVID-19 since an employee first tested positive in early March. Symptoms have been mild.

Two inmates have been hospitalized. One is back in the jail recovering. The other was hospitalized due to existing health conditions.

There have been very few cases of new symptomatic inmates reported in the last week due to aggressive efforts to contain the virus.

Prison population has been reduced, through court efforts, to 1,180, down 240 from a week ago and down significantly from its high of 1,700 at the beginning of the year.

Inmates who have been exposed to the virus or who recently entered the prison have been separated. Heightened sanitation measures are in place. The Chester County Health Department continues to monitor the situation.

Madden emphasized that decisions to release prisoners comes from the courts, not county council or the prison board, and is done by speeding up the hearing process for prisoners. No prisoner is released before serving their time and most of the county prisoners are non-violent, serving two year sentences, he said.
