Property reassessment notices started going out this week.

In response, taxpayers packed the County Council room Tuesday at two informational sessions to find out what the notices are all about, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Tyler Technologies, hired to do the reassessment, had Paul Miller on hand with answers.

The last county-wide assessment took place 20 years ago so market conditions over time have raised and lowered the values of individual properties.

That means some property owners are paying unfairly high or low taxes based on a dated, inaccurate value for their property.

A reassessment fairly distributes the tax burden by determining a property’s current value.

“We really want you to ask yourself one question, ‘Would I, could I be able to sell my house for the number?'”  Miller said.

Miller urged residents to set up an appointment if they disagree with the value on the notice.

Informal hearings will be conducted through May.  Residents have 10 days from receiving notices to request a hearing.

A formal assessment appeals will take place July through October.

The assessed values will be applied to municipal, county and school district property taxes for 2021.
