Ridley’s Nifty Fifty’s Expands Into South Philly With New Restaurant
Nifty Fifty’s, with its flagship diner off MacDade Blvd. in Ridley, has opened a place at 10th Street and Oregon Avenue in South Philadelphia, writes Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The retro 50s diner opened in Ridley Township in 1987. It now has four regional locations, including Northeast Philadelphia and Rt. 42 in Turnersville.
This is the second South Philly location. Nifty Fifty’s had a place at 10th Street, Reed Street and East Passyunk Avenue from 1993 to 2003. The new location is Nifty Fifty’s first franchise, operated by Matthew Devine.
Nifty Fifty’s is known for burgers, shakes, fries and a long list of soda choices. The South Philly diner will offer chicken and waffles and is not open for breakfast.
Its unique interior design features black and white checkered tiles and neon.
Also, thanks to the pandemic, service is now only available as takeout through a walk-up window.
Two more locations are planned in 2021: a franchise in Warminster and a company-owned diner in Kensington.
Nifty Fifty’s had a location in Bensalem that was destroyed by fire in 2013.
Another location, in Clementon, closed about six years ago.
