A $30 million parking garage is being built at the 69th Street Transportation Center, writes Kevin Tustin for the Daily Times.

Township leaders and state representatives joined SEPTA officials Friday to announce the next improvements at the Center.

The multi-tiered parking garage will accommodate 431 vehicles. A surface lot will handle 89 more vehicles. Current parking accommodates 182 vehicles.

Doubling the number of parking spaces will alleviate parking issues every morning at the Center.

An accessible walkway will connect commuters to the various terminals and a covered walkaway will connect the parking garage to the transportation center.

A covered bus berth will be created at the Market Street bus terminal.

Over 35,000 commuters pass through the center every day to get to places like the Philadelphia International Airport, West Chester, Norristown, and various locations through Philadelphia by bus or rail.

“Building up rather than out capitalizes on existing land resources,” said SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey Knueppel.

The parking garage will also be open to shoppers and visitors to the 69th Street area.

Construction is expected to start before summer 2020 and is expected to last 18 months.
