A new state-of-the-art high school in Springfield is starting to take shape as the 2019-20 school year gets underway, writes Susan L. Serbin for the Delaware County News Network.

The new school on South Rolling Road at the SEPTA rail line was a decade in the making. The process included five town hall meetings and approvals by township planners and commissioners.

The entire $130 million project includes demolition of the existing high school and grounds building; a new three-story school with administrative offices; a maintenance building; parking lots; a stadium and track; six tennis courts; and four additional playing fields.

The school is expected to open in September 2020.

The listing also included bus facilities, but the district has been actively pursuing options to preclude the need for onsite bus parking and maintenance.

In 2018-19, the existing stadium was demolished and the main gym taken down.

By summer’s end, a new steel structure rose at the site of the new school.

The Springfield Cougars “home” football games will be played at Strath Haven High School during construction.

Residents, taxpayers and other interested parties can continue to see updates at the district website www.ssdcougars.org.
