Jay McClellan, an adjunct professor at Delaware County Community College, is one of the region’s most in-demand painters of pet dogs, writes Len Lear for Chestnut Hill Local.

McClellan is renowned for his virtually photographic painting style, and in the last year, he completed more than 30 commissioned works.

His pieces hang on the walls of White Dog Café restaurants in University City and Haverford and at Harrah’s Casino in Chester. His work is also featured in many private collections, including Chase Utley’s.

To follow his passion, McClellan gave up a lucrative career in graphic design, and went back to school to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Memphis College of Art and a Master of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

“I was looking for something more out of life,” he said. “Painting commissions is a fulfilling form of being creative and collaborating.”
